Puget Sound region receives $97M for transit projects
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is awarding two grants to Puget Sound-area projects, the agency announced Monday. Community Transit in Snohomish County will receive $37 million, while the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will receive $59.9 million, both for bus rapid transit projects.
The money is part of the FTA's Capital Investment Grants Small Starts program. According to the FTA, projects receiving funding must meet certain statutory and regulatory requirements before they can receive the grants. The agency added the projects are "nearing completion" of these requirements.
Millions of Americans rely on public transit to get to work, services, and family and communities need support to create more public transit options. The Biden-Harris administration is committed to modernizing and expanding our public transit systems, and that includes support for these great projects, Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary, said in a statement.
Community Transit's grant will go to the 11.3-mile Swift Orange Line project, which should start operating by March 2024. The bus line will connect Edmonds College in Lynnwood with the McCollum Park-and-Ride in Mill Creek. In addition to connecting with two other Swift lines, the Swift Orange Line will connect with the Sound Transit Link at Lynnwood City Center. The Lynnwood Link extension is also scheduled to begin operating in 2024.
