NONPROFITS NOT IMMUNE

When Covid-19 hit, the effects on the nonprofits were devastating and immediate. Across the state, organizations are still reeling from the economic fallout.

“What we need to understand is that Covid broke the back of a system already teetering on the edge. As a state, we were already experiencing income inequality,” Washington State Community Action Partnership (WSCAP) Executive Director Jeff DeLuca said. “Even as we saw massive economic growth and prosperity and are the No. 1 best state to live and work in, we were not seeing that prosperity shared within the broader population. Once Covid came along, that system basically collapsed.”

In Seattle, the situation is dire.

On March 4, King County health officials began strongly recommending physical distancing. Gordon McHenry Jr., CEO and president of United Way of King County, remembers the day well. It meant 105 regular employees and more than 100 AmeriCorps workers would work remotely and United Way’s office on Second Avenue closed.

so the smaller ones are in big trouble. The ones that directly help people are now in a difficult position. The food banks appear to be doing OK compared to others.
