AG Ferguson takes on national debt collection agency
Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson is suing a national debt collection company, Renton-based Convergent Outsourcing, for allegedly pressuring consumers to pay up and resolve old debts that were past the statute of limitations for a collection lawsuit.
Under its consumer protection lawsuit, the AG's office alleges that Convergent sent 75,466 collection letters pushing consumers to "settle" old debts while not disclosing that the statute of limitations had expired.
"Debt collection companies cannot use deception as a means to get around the laws," Ferguson said in a statement. "I intend to hold this large, sophisticated debt collection corporation accountable for its unlawful conduct putting profits above the law."
The deceptive "settlement offers" caused 3,292 Washington consumers to make payments to Convergent on their old debts, according to the AG's suit.
