Northam Signs Ethics Bill - James Madison University Denies Allegations On Bolling Hire

HARRISONBURG — Gov. Ralph Northam signed legislation Tuesday that would have prevented Bill Bolling from getting the job he took with James Madison University in the fall.

Bolling, a former Republican state senator and two-term lieutenant governor, started a three-year stint as a senior fellow in residence for public service at JMU on Oct. 1, earning an annual salary of $140,000, a signing bonus to cover the first year of rent, and free club seats to home football games.

Through the Freedom of Information Act, an investigation by the Richmond Times-Dispatch revealed how Bolling, while still on the JMU board of visitors, began seeking employment with JMU President Jonathan Alger before his term ended at the end of June.

JMU spokesmen Bill Wyatt said in an interview Thursday that the article by RT-D made “a lot of claims and took a lot out of context.”
