Chambersburg PD help crack Mid-Atlantic $1.2 million card-skimming scheme
RICHMOND, Va. - Chambersburg Police assisted in the investigation of a man who federal authorities say stole more than $1.2 million from people across the region using ATM skimmers.
Roberto De Miranda Martinez, 43, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Richmond, Va., to bank fraud after he was caught installing a card-reading ATM skimming device and camera on an ATM in Colonial Heights, Va., according to a release from United States Attorney Tracey Doherty-McCormick in the Eastern District of Virginia.
In skimming schemes, assailants attach devices to ATMs or payment points that pick up data from a person's bank card, then use the data to clone cards and gain funds from the customer's account. In this case, a variety of people would collect the skimmers and use the account information obtained to make cash withdrawals. Across the region, Miranda Martinez is believed to have stolen approximately $1.2 million.
Chambersburg Police got involved in early November after the department received reports of thefts from several F&M Trust accounts in the Chambersburg area, police said in a release.
