DeAndre Harris turns self in; attorney says assault charge based on misleading evidence

UPDATED: 12 p.m. Oct. 12
DeAndre Harris turned himself in to the Charlottesville Police Department at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday on his unlawful wounding charge. He has been released on an unsecured bond.

The man making claims against DeAndre Harris, who was charged Monday with felony unlawful wounding in relation to a violent incident during the Aug. 12 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, is the leader of a neo-Confederate hate group, according to multiple sources.

Attorney S. Lee Merritt issued a statement on Tuesday evening asserting that Harold Ray Crews, chairman of the League of the South’s North Carolina chapter, is the complainant in the charge against Harris and has led a campaign to “manipulate the Charlottesville judiciary and further victimize Harris” by providing incomplete video evidence that led to a warrant being issued for Harris.

“Mr. Crews was not injured in any way by DeAndre Harris,” the statement reads.
