James E. Ryan, dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will be the University of Virginias ninth president. ... Ryan, an expert on law and education, was approved by the Board of Visitors on Friday as Teresa A. Sullivans successor. ... An official announcement followed the vote.
Ryan, 50, is no stranger to UVa. After graduating summa cum laude from Yale in 1988, Ryan was first in his class at UVas School of Law. He clerked for Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, and then worked in Newark, New Jersey, as a public interest lawyer before entering into teaching.
Ryan joined the UVa faculty in 1998, became the Matheson and Morgenthau Distinguished Professor and won several awards for teaching. He was the School of Laws academic associate dean from 2005-2009 and founded and directed the schools Program in Law and Public Service.
Todays announcement comes after a national search by a select committee of board members, faculty and students. Throughout the search, faculty and students stressed their wish for candidates with an academic background.
