What if Texas really did secede?

Some 177 years after a violent divorce from Mexico, some unhappy Texans are again touting separation from the motherland, this time after a presidential election didn't favor one of the reddest states in the country.

Perhaps it's no surprise. Texas is the only state that has twice tried breakaways, experiencing the spoils of victory in 1836 but the torment of defeat in 1865.

"Let each go her own way," Peter Morrison, Hardin County's Republican treasurer, wrote in a recent Tea Party newsletter, calling those who voted to re-elect President Barack Obama "maggots."Critics consider that sentiment nothing but bravado.

Still, the state's Republican leaders are in no mood to repair a fractured relationship with the federal government.

1. So does that mean I have to apply for US citizenship

Being born in Texas might put me behind everyone in line for citizenship

2. It would be OK

because they'd still have NASA and all the military bases.

3. But wouldn't they be abandoned

if they belong to the federal government?

Or at least Texas would have to sign a treaty or memorandum of understanding or whatever.

4. TX would immediately achieve the status of a Third World nation.

If all the federal money left, TX would be broke.

5. Yes, but the Teabaggers would still want their fricking tax breaks.

You can't explain anything to the dunderheads.

may or may not continue. Medicare payments will cease.

10. When I was active-duty Army from 1983 - 1991, San Antonio, TX had

4 Air Force Bases (Yes! Four.) and an Army post (Ft. Sam Houston). Well, since Texas would no longer be part of the US, those bases and all those soldiers and airmen (and all the money that these airmen and soldiers spend) would have to be moved to some other part of the US, wouldn't they.

The economy of some places in Texas would shrivel up and die if this were to happen. I think someone should remind these that Texas pols of that fact.

11. Well, if that's what Texas wants to attempt,

the state leaders voting on such a measure should prepare for a few encounters with "Danny the Wonder Drone" and a bunch of his friends.

It will never happen! For bad or worse, Texas is America's crazy uncle and we'll always be family.

Like a spoiled child we should encourage them to to leave and when they realize what it's like in the real world they would come back and never mention it again

17. What If We Walked Away From This Thread?

Isn't there enough hatred of Texas on DU already, without encouraging more of it? Do we really need to solicit criticism here in the Texas group from ill-informed posters who look upon us all as Ted Cruz clones? Walk away.....
