Eagle Ford Shale lights up South Texas as boom in oil, gas production continues

COASTAL BEND — If you thought the night sky around Interstate 37 and U.S. Highway 59 was getting brighter, it wasn’t your imagination.

The Eagle Ford Shale drilling boom is now so big you can see it from space.

New satellite imagery shows a remarkable perspective of the activity, with lights from hundreds of oil and gas rigs carving a crescent-shaped glow across the darkness of rural South Texas.

The Eagle Ford lights run between San Antonio at the top left and Corpus Christi in the center of the images. At the bottom are McAllen and Brownsville, while Houston is the large patch of light at top right.
