New Democratic ad targets Chip Roy for opposing tax break for Gold Star families

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee launched a “significant digital ad buy” Friday, unveiling a new ad for Facebook and Instagram criticizing Austin-area Republican congressman Chip Roy for his vote against a recent bill to lower taxes for so-called Gold Star families.

“It’s shameful. Rep. Chip Roy just voted AGAINST tax relief for families of our fallen service members,” the ad says. “If Rep. Roy won’t fight for Gold Star families, he doesn’t deserve to represent us in Congress.”

Last month, the freshman congressman from Hays County and staunch fiscal conservative voted against a bill to change a provision in the 2017 Republican tax bill that forced Gold Star families — relatives of deceased military personnel — to pay higher taxes when collecting survivor benefits. Roy voted against the measure, in part because “House Democrats stripped bipartisan language from the bill ... that would have allowed spending from parents’ 529 accounts to pay for apprenticeships, homeschooling, and other educational programs,” Roy said in a statement.

The House ultimately passed the measure, which lowered the income tax rate on Gold Star families from 37% to 12%-15%, 417-3.
