State sues ex-Rep. Dawnna Dukes to collect $10,000 in fines
The state has sued former legislator Dawnna Dukes to collect on $10,000 in fines she owes the Texas Ethics Commission for failing to file a campaign finance report on time in 2018.
The campaign filing, which is called a semiannual report and includes lists of political donations and expenses, was due in July of last year, shortly after Dukes came in third in the Democratic primary while running for reelection to House District 46.
Dukes did not file it, however, until January, and the Ethics Commission assessed fines according to state law: $500 for missing the initial deadline and $100 for every additional day that it was late, maxing out at $10,000, said Ian Steusloff, general counsel for the commission.
After not receiving payment from Dukes, the commission forwarded the case to the attorney generals office, which filed suit Wednesday.
