Some celebrate as Texas State student president Clegg is impeached
SAN MARCOS It started with a fiery press release that then-student government president Connor Clegg issued following the publication of a controversial column on whiteness in the student newspaper in November.
It ended Monday night, with Texas State University student senators voting overwhelmingly to remove Clegg from office, an impeachment vote that sparked shouts of joy and dancing in the aisles of a university auditorium.
Along the way, the impeachment of Clegg crystalized a growing frustration and anger among minority students on this campus, which has been targeted more than a dozen times over the last year by neo-Nazi groups posting racist propaganda.
The student government vote was rescheduled for Monday after protesting students held a three-day sit-in following a scuttled vote last week, when 19 student senators skipped a hearing, preventing the establishment of a quorum.
