Family devastated by loss of teen who shot himself in Austin police car Sunday

The parents of a 19-year-old who authorities say fatally shot himself while in Austin police custody Sunday afternoon in downtown Austin have issued a statement expressing love, thanks and sorrow.

Police on Monday confirmed that Zachary Anam died after being taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge, but they have not released any other details about the investigation.

“Zac was a beautiful kid, who loved his family and friends very much, and was loved by them very much,” the family said in a statement to the American-Statesman on Tuesday.

According to the family, Anam was born in Connecticut, but raised in Austin. He was a member of the varsity football and wrestling teams at Bowie High School, where he graduated in 2015.

[font color=330099]There are two questions that don't appear to be addressed in the story:

1) Don't they still handcuff suspects (usually with their hands behind their backs) when they arrest someone?

2) They must have conducted some type of search in order to find the control substance the young man had in his possession and most likely whatever item(s) he shoplifted. Why didn't they find the firearm that was in his waistband? I'm not aware of any police officer that takes someone into custody without doing an initial patdown of the suspect./font]

After a car accident, I got a ride home from the accident by the responding officer
(which was a few blocks from my house) and I was given a full pat down and he searched my backpack I took with me -- and, I wasn't even arrested he doing me a favor.

This really does sound suspicious to me, unless the article was poorly written.
