"The wrongful death lawsuit was filed in Harris County because that is where Manhattan-Vaughn JVP is based. Texas Cutting & Coring was also named in the lawsuit, but jurors did not find the company liable in Garcia's death. However, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined Texas Cutting & Coring $63,000 in May 2014. Lindamood Demolition was fined $56,000.
According to court papers, jurors found Manhattan-Vaughn JVP was responsible in how the demolition work was performed and Manhattan-Vaughn JVP and Lindamood Demolition were negligent.
Among the awards, jurors felt Garcia's mother deserved $15.5 million for mental anguish, and his children were owed $7.5 million. Jurors also said in court papers Garcia's mother was owed $7.5 million for "loss of companionship," while his children deserved $20 million."
