Grand jury indicts men accused of rape, beating of black, gay man
CORPUS CHRISTI -- Two men were indicted on federal hate crime charges for a rape and beating of a black, gay man.
Jimmy Garza Jr., 32, of Corpus Christi, and Ramiro Serrata Jr., 22, of Robstown, are accused of inviting the man to a Corpus Christi apartment, then attacking him while calling him racial and homophobic slurs, according to a United States Attorney's Office news release.
Garza and Serrata are charged with conspiracy to commit hate crimes, a hate crime violation based on race and color, a hate crime violation based on sexual orientation and using a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence, the release states.
The man was sodomized and beaten with multiple objects. He was also forced to clean his blood while naked March 8, 2012, according to the release. He escaped by jumping out a window, the release states.
