Williamson County DA Jana Duty to serve time instead of appealing

GEORGETOWN -- Williamson County District Attorney Jana Duty is going to jail Friday instead of appealing a contempt of court ruling against her, according to a court document.

Duty agreed to surrender her personal bond Friday and start serving her jail sentence, an affidavit to surrender filed Friday said.

It was unclear whether she had already been booked into the Williamson County Jail at 5 p.m. Friday.

Visiting Judge Doug Shaver sentenced her Aug. 6 to 10 days in jail and a $500 fine for violating a gag order in the capital murder case of Crispin Harmel.

She will not spend 10 days in jail because she will get two days credit for each day served, said one of her attorneys, Perry Minton. He did not respond to a request for further comment Friday.
