Department of Justice finds Lubbock police engaged in 'pattern or practice of discrimination'

The Department of Justice Civil Rights Division is accusing the city of Lubbock of discriminating against Hispanics and women in the Lubbock Police Department.

A Department of Justice investigation found the city “engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination against Hispanics and women” in hiring probationary police officers, according to a letter from the DOJ.

Police Chief Roger Ellis said he believes the current standards are necessary for the police force.

“We feel like the hiring process is fair with other cities,” he said.
