Bailout numbers decreasing; Law enforcement remains vigilant

LIVE OAK COUNTY – The number of “bailout” incidents are actually fewer than previous years, according to LOC Sheriff Larry Busby.

It’s a fairly common practice: human smugglers, when confronted by law enforcement, will often run their (usually stolen) vehicles as far off of the road and into the brush as the vehicle will go, and then the driver and his passengers will all “bail out” of the car and scatter as far and in as many directions as possible. Since law enforcement officers have more regard for their patrol vehicles than the traffickers have for the stolen ones, the chase often continues with the officers on foot.

“And they’re not likely to catch many of them that way,” Busby said.

In March, Live Oak County deputies filed four Border Incident Assessment Reports (BIAR) for such activities.
