Follow-up: Georgetown PD officer suspended 40 days for tripping students disputes punishment

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS -- George Bermudez, the police officer who was suspended 40 days without pay over the summer for tripping a high school student at a championship soccer game in April, is disputing his punishment, calling it overly harsh and out of step with the department’s disciplinary procedures.

Mr. Bermudez filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission September 8. He claims the suspension violated his civil rights and was inconsistent with other punishments handed out by Police Chief Wayne Nero.

The police department refused to comment on this story.

The two sides met in mediation Monday and Tuesday. An agreement was not finalized by press time Tuesday.
