Fort Worth, Texas, August 22, 2014: Pink Mizuno Wave Rider 16 running shoes were worn by Texas Senator Wendy Davis (Fort Worth-Dem) during her historic 11 hour filibuster. Senator Davis made history on June 25, 2013, when she put on those pink sneakers and a back brace to stand 11 hours on the Texas Senate floor filibustering an anti-abortion bill that would curtail women's reproductive rights and close women's health clinics in Texas. The bill did pass in a special session called by the Governor of Texas and since then 14 women's health clinics have closed throughout Texas. Wendy Davis is currently running for Texas Governor in the 2014 election.
Identical Pink Mizuno Wave Rider 16 running shoes like Wendy wore on June 25, 2013, on the Texas Senate floor have been purchased by the Tarrant County Democratic Woman's Club (TCDWC). The shoes have been autographed by Wendy Davis and she has signed a Certificate of Authenticity. One shoe will be available on eBay auction block for one week beginning Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 2014, and ending Sunday, September 7, 2014. The auction is sponsored by the TCDWC in Fort Worth, Texas. Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit Texas Democratic women candidates running for office at the local, county, and state levels.
The Tarrant County Democratic Woman's Club in Fort Worth, Texas was founded in 1928, in support of Alfred Smith for Democratic President . Also, these women were very concerned about the Ku Klux Klan's activities in North Texas at that time. This Club has been in continuous existence for almost 86 years supporting women's issues and Democratic women candidates at all levels.
