AP reports on the GOP's successful filibuster of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' veterans benefits bill:
Senate Republicans have blocked a Democratic bill that would enrich health, education and job-training programs for the nation's 22 million veterans.
And why did Republicanswho "won" the vote because "only" 56 senators voted in favor of moving forward with the billdecide to block it?
Republicans complained that the bill was too expensive. And they were upset that Majority Leader Harry Reid prevented a vote on a GOP amendment cutting the bill and adding sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program.

(2,567 posts)Senate Republicans on Thursday derailed legislation to expand health care, education and job-training benefits for the nations 22 million veterans. I have a hard time understanding how anyone could vote for tax breaks for billionaires, for millionaires, for large corporations and then say we don't have the resources to protect our veterans, Bernie told the Senate before his legislation was sidetracked on a mostly party-line vote. As chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, Bernies bill was backed by more than two dozen veterans service organizations. I dont know how anyone who voted no today can look a veteran in the eye and justify that vote, said American Legion Commander Daniel Dellinger. Bernie isnt giving up. Just three more Republican votes are needed to pass the bill. CNN's Chris Cuomo called what happened "outrageous."
