One dead after fight with officer at Greenville Memorial Hospital
The State Law Enforcement Division and the Greenville County Coroner's Office are investigating a death that occurred at Greenville Memorial Hospital on Monday morning.
Donald Keith Smith, 48, of Crawford Hill Road in Greenville, was pronounced dead at 10:23 a.m., shortly before the Coroner's Office was called to the hospital, said Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans.
Smith had been admitted to the hospital where he became combative before hitting a hospital security officer, Evans said. A struggle followed and that's when investigators say Smith became unresponsive and stopped breathing, Evans said.
Hospital personnel made unsuccessful attempts to revive Smith, according to the Coroner's Office report.
