Democratic Super PAC spends big on Pennsylvania special election

A Democratic Super PAC is making a major, last-minute investment in a special House election in Pennsylvania, a sign of some party officials’ growing belief that Democrats might pull off a shock upset in the heart of Donald Trump country.

Patriot Majority PAC on Wednesday will begin airing TV ads in the southwest Pennsylvania district, part of a $250,000 buy that also includes digital media. The ads will run for the final two weeks before the March 13 election.

It is the second Democratic organization to start running ads this week on behalf of Democratic nominee Conor Lamb, joining the party-aligned group End Citizens United.

Patriot’s TV ads will run on cable and broadcast, attacking GOP nominee Rick Saccone over hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer-funded perks he used while a state lawmaker. It equates the money it said Saccone used — $435,000 — to seven years’ worth of paychecks for the average resident in the 18th Congressional District, or the equivalent to three homes.

2. This race is important, but it's not the end of the world

Conor Lamb has a good chance to win and flip this seat for the PA 18th Congressional District, however it seems the GOP is pulling out all the stops. I'm seeing tons of TV ads for Saccone in which he's (apparently) running against Nancy Pelosi. I'm saying WTF? The ads barely mention his opponent Conor Lamb at all, they're all dragging down Nancy Pelosi. Can anyone say misogynist?

Last night I saw an anti-Conor Lamb TV ad that tried to look like swift-boating except it just shows how empty their hand is. If that's the worst they've got, they don't have anything. Even if I weren't a Democrat, I'd vote for Lamb on the basis of the sorry TV ads that Saccone is putting out. Not a word said about Saccone's experience or voting record, because I guess he doesn't have one.

I really hope this doesn't escalate into another Katie McGinty/Pat Toomey debacle. The ridiculous amount of money that was spent on that Senate race in 2016 could have fed an African country for three years. Democrats cannot outspend the Republicans, so we have to be smarter than them. It's our only hope.

Conor Lamb grew up a prominent Pittsburgh Democratic family and served as an officer in the US Marines. He's a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's office in Pittsburgh where he's been successful prosecuting against gangs, drug dealers, and gun runners among other cases. Please see the Wikipedia article for more info on Conor Lamb:

Good luck Conor! I sent you a donation a few weeks ago and I just received your hand-written postcard thanking me. It was unexpected, and a very nice touch!
