Democrats say turnout of black voters key to North Carolina’s US Senate contest

WASHINGTON — Members of the Congressional Black Caucus said Friday that they’ll travel by bus to North Carolina and other states as part of a new drive to get African-Americans out to vote in the Nov. 4 election.

It kicks off this weekend with a “Freedom Sunday.”

The caucus members plan to reach out to 3,000 churches around the country Sunday and on subsequent weekends during the campaign, urging pastors to talk to their congregations about the importance of voting and help members learn how to register.

Meanwhile, Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee launched an ad Thursday that’s playing on black radio stations. It depicts a conversation between two women who complain that Hagan’s Republican opponent, state House Speaker Thom Tillis, cut funds for education, resulting in bigger class sizes and not enough textbooks for children to take home.

Good for the Black Caucus. May they find success. The Black churches are no strangers to getting out jwirr Sep 2014 #1

Democrats would do well to campaign on pro-2A stances in NC. appal_jack Sep 2014 #8

I just wish we could get more organized with public transportation to the poles. Also, just a written mail in ballot should be considered. Voting as a revered act of citizenship needs to be taught as a structured activity. IMO.

I am now an assistant judge with my local board of elections and I blame that on DU.

Wonder if it will get voters from both (all?) sides running to the polls in November. Some DUers like to claim 2010 wasn't about Obama, but it was indeed: Obamacare. 2014 will be no different. Tillis is attacking Hagan on guns, the deficit, "siding with Obama," anything that will stick to the wall.

Gun control is a losing issue in NC. Kay Hagan has been generally cognizant of that, and mostly pretty neutral-to-good on Second Amendment related issues. But I still would prefer that our Democratic candidates emphasize targeting truly violent criminals and supporting better enforcement of the laws we already have on the books; and then focus on more important and populist issues here. It's not like we have a shortage of things to focus on in NC: education, tax policy in the state, fracking, coal ash, employment, trade policy, jobs, racial equality & justice, etc.
