Participants spend night in a cardboard box to raise funds for Family Promise of Onslow County

With temperatures expected to dip into the 30s overnight Friday, Cardboard City participants were exposed to just one of the challenges that face those who live on the streets ...

Among those who took part were church youth groups, clubs, civic organizations and concerned families. The participants had to raise at least $100 through self-donation, pledges or fundraisers in order to set up camp.

Participants were allowed to bring only sleeping bags, tarp, medications and essential toiletries. Outside food, electronic and entertainment items and anything deemed nonessential were not allowed. Strictly forbidden were alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, glass bottles, weapons, iPods, MP3 Players and cellphones. Chaperones, however, had cellphones in case of an emergency ...
