Cuomo Issues Order To Tighten Oil Transportation

State of Politics

Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order on Tuesday that directs environmental and transportation regulators, as well as the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to strengthen the state’s oversight of the shipment of pretroleum products.

The order comes as state Department of Environmental Conservation’s public comment period is extended to April 2 on the application for oil shipping company Global Partners to expand its operations at the Port of Albany.

Albany residents and elected officials have raised concerns about the proposal at the Port of Albany.

The order from Cuomo notes that there have been multiple accidents recently involving oil being carried by rail, including a Quebec crash that killed 47 people.
