Brooklyn man busted for racially fueled assaults on three white men in three days
A Brooklyn man was busted for a hate-fueled, three-day rampage this summer during which he terrorized three random white men, insulting one and assaulting two others without provocation, prosecutors said Wednesday. Kevin Raphael, 39, spewed obscenities and racial slurs toward the trio of targets attacked in broad daylight on the last three days of July, prosecutors charged.
Raphael was held on bail of $50,000 cash or $25,000 bond at his arraignment on a 13-count indictment for assault as a hate crime, menacing as a hate crime and other charges for the racist attacks on July 29, 30 and 31. All three white victims were targeted “simply because of the color of their skin,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. Raphael spewed obscenities and racial slurs in all three incidents, and slugged two of his unsuspecting victims in the head, court papers alleged.
The last two attacks occurred on city buses, with Raphael bashing the riders as they sat in their seats, prosecutors charged. Wlodzimierz Wielocha, 59, was smacked repeatedly in the head while riding the B41 bus along Flatbush Ave. on July 31, court papers alleged. The victim suffered a concussion in the attack, along with facial bruising and redness.
Two days earlier, the defendant approached Daniel Iglesias, 30, as the victim walked with his pregnant wife at 1 p.m. near Empire Blvd. and Rogers Ave. Raphael’s racist rant was accompanied by a gesture to his waistband, as if he was carrying a gun. “What are you looking at?” Raphael asked. “What are you looking for? I kill white (expletive) like you. I will kill every white (expletive) around here.”
In the July 30 attack, Raphael allegedly marched up to fellow rider Maximilian Ferlsch on the B25 bus and uncorked a punch to the law student’s face. Raphael jumped off the bus at the next stop, leaving the stunned Ferlsch, 29, with redness and bruising to the face and eye.
