De Blasio ignores Teamster carriage industry ‘solutions’
On April 5, a lobbyist for the union representing horse carriage drivers emailed the city's community affairs commissioner to float 11 "potential solutions" the Teamsters were willing to consider as reforms to the industry.
The hope was that the group could find a compromise short of Mayor Bill de Blasio's campaign pledge to abolish the industry outright.
The suggestions included the creation of a Central Park educational equestrian centera true win-win for everyone involvedas well as making the carriages a sanctuary to save horses marked for slaughter, and the creation of a Horse and Carriage Commission inside the Taxi and Limousine Commission to help regulate the industry.
I look forward to continuing our discussion, Heather Beaudoin, the lobbyist representing the Teamsters wrote to Marco Carrion, the head of the mayors Community Affairs Unit and former political director for the New York City Central Labor Council.
