State awards $11M in after-school grants

Jessica Bakeman

ALBANY—The governor's office announced Friday that 68 after-school programs across New York will share nearly $11 million in state and federal grants.

The grants will support community organizations such as YMCAs and Boys and Girls clubs in New York City and its northern suburbs, Long Island and upstate, particularly in western New York. While Governor Andrew Cuomo celebrated the $10.9 million in grants, which are being administered by the Office of Children and Family Services, after-school advocates said the funding was not enough to serve students who could benefit from the programming.

Nora Niedzielski-Eichner, executive director of the New York State Afterschool Network, said in a statement the 68 grant winners account for only about a quarter of the 281 applicants.
