City's libraries ask for $65 million budget boost to open branches six days a week

The city’s libraries made a plea for $65 million Tuesday to keep all library branches open six days a week.

With the extra cash, officials could open all 207 branches for six days, increase the hours they are open to an average of 50 from 43, add 600 jobs, and loan out 10 million more books and other materials, New York Public Library president Tony Marx told the City Council.

“For an increased investment in library funding, we will provide increased hours, books, and educational programs as well as improved and inspiring spaces. We will provide more of what New Yorkers need and what they deserve,” he said.
