Schneiderman and Bratton announce heroin-antidote plan

Azi Paybarah

In response to a sharp spike in the number of heroin-related deaths in New York City, nearly 20,000 police officers will soon carry a drug that, when administered, can arrest the effects of an overdose, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and police commissioner Bill Bratton announced today.

“It costs about 60 bucks and it saves lives,” Schneiderman said at a Manhattan press conference announcing the new initiative, standing alongside Bratton.

After four years of steady decline, Schneiderman said the number of heroin-related deaths in the city since 2010 “increased 84 percent.” It is a “growing problem” and “something we have to fight,” he said.
