Former New York Times editor Arthur Gelb dies at 90

Matthew Lynch

Arthur Gelb, who in a 45-year career with The New York Times rose from copyboy to managing editor, helping to guide the paper through some of its most transformative years, died Tuesday at age 90, the paper reported.

The cause was complications from a stroke, his son Peter Gelb told the paper.

Gelb was a personal friend and professional ally of the iconoclastic Times editor A.M. Rosenthal, who ran the paper as executive editor from 1969 to 1986, as internally and externally eventful a time as any in its 162-year history.

Gelb worked as metropolitan editor from 1967 to 1978, deputy managing editor from 1977 to 1986 and managing editor from 1986 until his retirement in 1989.
