Strip OK for California Chrome

ESPN

California Chrome has gotten approval to wear a nasal strip during the Belmont Stakes, keeping along the horse's chance to become just the sport's 12th Triple Crown winner.

New York Racing Association steward Steve Lewandowski told ESPN's Jeanine Edwards on Monday that California Chrome would be allowed to wear the strip during the 1½-mile race on June 7. It's the longest and most grueling of the three Triple Crown races.

Isn't it interesting that with all the scientific advances since the '70's we can't create a bigger, faster, stronger horse?

And this technological scientific advancement dispute was over nasal strips?

Some horses have respiratory bleeding as they race and States like Kentucky and Maryland allowed the horses to use Lasix. New York has always been a drug free racing zone. The strip simply opens up the horses nasal passage and allows the proper flow of oxygen. As for making a better horse, genetics is genetics and race horses are fragile by nature and many of these horses are coddled and barely raced as 2 year olds. Couple that with the enormous cost of training and running a thoroughbred and you see why the California Chrome story is such a big one. I remember Alydar and Affirmed in 77 and then Seattle Slew in 78. prior to Secretariat in 73 no horse had won the Triple Crown since 1948 and we once again close to that record again.

In much the same way we've done with dogs, and like with dogs, our mucking about has caused some of the health issues, IMHO.
