Ethics complaint filed against John Cahill a day after he announces run for attorney general

An upstate artist has filed a complaint with the state ethics commission seeking an investigation into whether GOP Attorney General candidate John Cahill and his energy consulting firm have illegally lobbied the state.

The Monday filing comes a day after Cahill formally announced he will run against incumbent Democrat Attorney General Eric Schneiderman this year.

The Daily News recently reported that state online records show that Cahill, a former top aide to ex-Gov. George Pataki, and members of his firm represented four different clients before three state agencies since 2013 despite not being registered lobbyists.

A Cahill spokesman and the agencies themselves at the time said that three of the meetings were informational and one was social. The Cahill spokesman insisted there had been no lobbying done despite the agencies listing the reasons for three of the meetings as the procurement of state business. The fourth was said to be over a regulatory meeting.
