DEC to conduct air tests in Albany as company prepares to expand oil shipping business
By Richard Moody
In the midst of a controversy over one company's plan to expand operations related to crude oil at the Port of Albany, the Department of Environmental Conservation is performing air quality tests in surrounding communities to determine if further tests are needed.
The traffic of crude oil through the port has increased as well as through the state as a whole has vastly increased in recent years. The DEC is also reviewing a request made by Global Companies, LLC, to change their air permit for the Port of Albany to allow the company to heat thick Canadian tar sands oil at the site. Heating the oil makes it easier to transfer from one train car to another. Local communities have shown concern regarding increased activity at the port and proposed expansions of Global's operations.
