Is it time for Menendez to resign?
Justice is reopening case against him.
We have a Democratic Governor who can nominate a Democratic Senator. It will look bad for us if Menendez is convicted. So I think he should resign

5. I don't care for Menendez, BUT
I don't want to see another Democratic Senator hounded from office over trumped up charges. Given the last jury voted 10-2 to acquit, I'm not too worried about a conviction.

8. No reason to resign, but he could consider not running for re-election.
He could resign and give a new Senator the advantage of incumbency, but there's a downside: The new Senator would have the advantage of incumbency. It would mean for all practical purposes that the new Senator was filled by Murphy instead of by the voters.
That's why, if it looks bad for him, I think he'd do better just to finish out his term but not run. I don't know what the deadline for the primary is. That would make a difference. |
