N.J. lawmakers demand federal action after anti-Semitic incidents
WASHINGTON -- A series of attacks at Jewish cemeteries and bomb threats directed at Jewish community centers has members of New Jersey's congressional delegation demanding federal action.
U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Gov. Chris Christie and others plan to rally Friday at one of the New Jersey centers that has received bomb threats.
"I don't know how you're not anxious, given what's going on," said Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-5th Dist.), who hosted a conference call Thursday with law enforcement officials and representatives of Jewish institutions and will be at Friday's event. "Also, you fear that with all the political winds, there's a little license to hate."
Participants in Gottheimer's conference call included U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman, officials of the federal and state homeland security departments, local government officials, members of local law enforcement agencies and members of the state's Jewish community.
