Minnesota now has a two-year state budget; Walz signed all of it
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has signed Minnesota’s two-year budget into state law.
The $48.3 billion in spending over the next two years was the result of a compromise between Walz, a Democrat, and the state Legislature, which is split between Democrats and Republicans. It took Walz and lawmakers extra time — a special session of the Legislature — to reach the accord, in which many of the Democrats’ most ambitious tax and policy initiatives failed to become law, and Republicans approved more taxing and spending than they had hoped.
The spending plan touches on nearly every aspect of state government services, including health and human services, public school education, public higher education, transportation, agriculture, the environment and natural resources.
The 13 bills signed by Walz Thursday also prescribe how to spend proceeds from lottery funds and the Legacy Amendment sales tax.
