40 years later: The Great Blizzard of 1978

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Friday marks the 40th anniversary of one of the biggest blizzards to hit Michigan in recent history. The Great Blizzard of 1978 ranks as the number one snowstorm ever in Grand Rapids and much of the Lower Peninsula, Indiana and Ohio.

1. Remember it well. Mr. Shraby manned the plow in our small town

and plowed 24 hours straight except for an hour when he gave it over to someone so he could get a break. Some things that happened with that storm:

Our town only totally lost 1 road. Mr. Shraby kept all but one insignificant road with at least 1 lane open in case of emergency.
The neighboring town lost all of theirs.
Manistee called off their plows.
My brother lived in a trailer and couldn't get out any door, had to use a window.
Couldn't see our cars.
The coast guard cutter in the bay at Traverse City iced up and went turtle. They had to wait for spring to right it.
On the radio the weather man said the the barometer was lower than he had ever seen it.
Went for a ride to Traverse City after the roads were passable and all the banks were towering about the car.
The marquee in Traverse City had snow piled to the bottom of the marquee..what was play? Oh God!

2. yes, I remember it well also

Was a senior in High school, the long school break, worrying about my dad who had to drive to Muskegon which was hit very hard. I know stores were selling shirts, bumper stickers after, "i survived the blizzard of 78"
