20-mile backup is worst-case scenario for Mackinac Bridge's Labor Day closing

ST. IGNACE, MI - We're one week away from the Mackinac Bridge's first-ever closure for the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk. Motorists have been peppered with reminders for weeks.

But MDOT and bridge officials say if travelers don't heed their warning for the upcoming holiday weekend, they could find themselves in a massive traffic jam for hours alongside other annoyed motorists - and some strategically-placed porta-potties.

The worst-case scenario is a 20-mile backup on U.S. 2 next Monday morning, northwest of the Mackinac Bridge.

For security reasons, the landmark bridge connecting Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas will close to traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Sept. 4. Up to 60,000 people are expected to participate in the Labor Day walk.
