Congressman Ed Markey for US Senate - Progressive Massachusetts

Good news.

http://www.progressivemass.com/2/2013/02/05/congressman-ed-markey-for-us-senate/

Progressive Massachusetts is pleased to announce that it is endorsing Congressman Ed Markey for US Senate in the Democratic Primary. Congressman Markey received more than 97% of the votes cast by the organization’s members. This overwhelming support reflects, we believe, Congressman Markey’s leadership on issues that matter to our members – climate change, women’s rights and economic justice for working families.

“Congressman Markey will champion progressive policies in the Senate and will serve as true partner for Elizabeth Warren there,” said Deborah Shah, Executive Director. “Too much is at stake at this time – investment in our future, immigration reform, global warming and energy independence, gun control. We must have someone who will fight for our values and for the progressive solutions that are best for our nation and our Commonwealth.”

which should not come as a surprise. In the issues they care about, Markey is way above anybody else in this race, at least for now.

U.S. Rep. Ed Markey calls on president to address climate change, lands Sierra Club endorsement

Democratic U.S. Rep. Edward Markey is calling on President Barack Obama to officially acknowledge climate change in this year's State of the Union address while lauding an environmental endorsement in his own bid to replace Secretary of State John Kerry in the U.S. Senate.

...

Throughout his 36 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Ed Markey has been a staunch defender of the environment and champion for clean energy," said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club in a statement sent Wednesday morning. "Time and time again, he has led fights to clean up our air and water, curb the dangerous carbon pollution that is disrupting our climate, and put our nation on the path to an energy efficient economy powered by clean, safe energy."
...
In an email to supporters on Wednesday, Markey lamented on Hurricane Sandy and the record droughts and heat of 2012 as reasons to take action at a national level to address global warming and its effects on weather patterns.

"With its strongest champion John Kerry now gone, I want to be the passionate voice in the Senate for taking action on climate change. We can't let obstructionist Republicans who deny the science of global warming stop us from taking action," Markey said in the message. "We have to commit to action before it's too late to combat the most dire consequences of climate change. President Obama has a chance to take a huge step forward in the State of the Union address."

Democratic Senate candidate Ed Markey lands endorsement from AFSCME Council 93 union representing 35k Massachusetts employees

U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, D-Malden, landed the support of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 93 on Saturday, with the union pledging to support the ninth-longest serving congressman in his endeavor to succeed Secretary of State John Kerry in the U.S. Senate.

"When it comes to fighting for the middle class and securing adequate federal funding for the essential public services that Massachusetts needs and we provide, we know we can always count on Ed Markey," said Charles C. Owen, Jr., president of the union, in a statement. "He is an outspoken and highly respected leader in Congress who works to build consensus but refuses to yield to the ongoing pressure to balance our budget problems on the backs of public employees and the middle-class. Now more than ever, we need leaders like Congressman Markey in the United States Senate."

The union represents 35,000 employees in Massachusetts and is an affiliate of the national labor union of the same primary name.
