Shanthi, Mother Asian Elephant, Dies At The Smithsonian's National Zoo

WJLA News. A beloved member of the Asian elephant herd has passed away. Shanthi the elephant died after years of managing and treating her osteoarthritis, the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute announced Saturday.

Shanthi was suffering from osteoarthritis, a disease that impacts joint cartilage and the underlying bone with associated pain and stiffness. According to the National Zoo, she was first diagnosed with the chronic condition in her wrists when she was in her teen years.

Zoo officials noted that Shanthi's physical condition had irreversibly declined. On June 26, the zoo made the tough decision to euthanize her. Shanthi was estimated to be 45 years old and the National Zoo says she made important contributions to the zoo's knowledge of biology, reproduction, and diseases of this elephant species, which zoo officials say is endangered.

Smithsonian's National Zoo: As a public health precaution due to COVID-19, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute is temporarily closed to the public. Upon reopening, visitors to the Elephant Trails habitat can view the Zoo’s male elephant, Spike, and four female elephants: Bozie, Kamala, Swarna and Maharani. Meantime, visitors to the Zoo’s website can watch them on the Elephant Cam. ~ *SEE Photo in Link.
