Happy birthday, Metrorail, 42 years in operation yesterday.

It was opened in time for the Bicentennial.

#OnThisDay in 1976, Washington, DC (@WMATA) opened its subway system to the public. Happy 42nd Birthday!

This is a great Twitter account for little-known transportation milestones. Such as:

#OnThisDay in 1949, the California Zephyr begins service over the Burlington, Rio Grande & Western Pacific Railroads.

#OnThisDay in 1834, the very first U.S. railroad tunnel was completed - east of Johnstown, PA. cc: @NatlParkService

First new stop, Allentown Road. Then Camp Springs. Probably go down Route 5. Maybe go as far as La Plata.

At the other end, how does Greenbelt to BWI sound?

WMATA Green Line Extension Feasibility Study

WMATA fantasy combo map

TRANSIT By David Alpert (Founder) February 19, 2008

Many proposals are floating around for Metro expansion. Some have been thoroughly researched by government and are just waiting for funding, like the Dulles extension. Others are just suggestions from activists and bloggers. Many are somewhere in between.

To show the ideas in one place, I’ve created this fantasy map. Click on the map for a large version, and see below (or click on “read more”) for an explanation of all the changes.
