Jury decides on life in prison after second phase of sentencing

The man convicted of stabbing five people to death in a Denver bar will be sentenced to life in prison after one or more jurors found that the details of Dexter Lewis' life do not warrant a death sentence.

Their decision Thursday afternoon marks the end of the trial.

After 2½ hours of deliberations, the jury of two men and 10 women returned their verdict in the second stage of the sentencing hearing for Lewis.

He was convicted earlier this month of killing five people at Fero's Bar & Grill in October 2012. That verdict launched the case into a three-part sentencing hearing to decide whether Lewis would be sentenced to life in prison or death....

1. I live in Colorado, and having lived through Columbine and the theater shooting, I believe

that when a crime is as heinous as this theater shooting done by Lewis, the only rational, and fiscally responsible answer, is 'hang 'em high!'

The jury was 11 for death, and 1 holdout for life without parole. I suppose it's OK - the guy will NEVER again be seen in public and will live the rest of his life in a cage.

However it costs over $60K in taxpayer money every year this guy is in prison, to house him, provide health care, make sure he doesn't escape and take care of overhead. It took me around 30 years of working and getting raises to make that kind of money. And we're just giving it to this nimrod.

Now, I don't like the death penalty for most crimes, but for something like this theater shooting where they caught the guy red handed - a firing squad is appropriate.

My bet is he'll be killed by other prisoners soon, anyway. The grandmother of one of the victims expressed this fond hope.

And yes, the death penalty in this case would be about revenge. You bet. And, to make sure that THIS GUY never, ever, ever does something like that again.

3. With all the appeals (most mandatory) it would cost lots more than...

to lock him up for the rest of his miserable life. Death would be an out in his mind. Life without parole is probably worse than death.

The Joker's (I refuse to say his name) lawyers say they won't appeal.

I'm also glad that another black man wasn't added to death row after a white man had been reprieved.
