Field Poll: Mayor Ashley Swearengin leads state controller's race

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A new Field Poll shows Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin leading the race for state controller. She's currently the choice of 28 percent of likely voters in the June primary.

Board of Equalization member Betty Yee is the pick for 19 percent of likely voters.

Assembly Speaker John Perez comes in third with 14 percent.

Another 1 percent prefer other candidates, and 38 percent are undecided.

Swearingen is mayor of Fresno, is a right-winger and is looking to climb the political ladder. She successfully sold off the commercial trash pick up to a private company, then tried to do the same thing with residential trash service. The unions got together, got it on the ballot and her privatization efforts were defeated by 801 votes.

I know it's early in the 2014 election season but the title caught my eye and I thought I'd give everyone a heads-up as to who the enemy will be this year. And believe me when I say privatize-all-things-Swearengin IS the enemy.

1. How in the World is a right winger winning anything in California?

I thought that was a progressive state. I am surprised by this story.

3. Like it or not, this forum is about ALL of California,

not just the Bay Area and L.A.

The fact that you and a few others feel the need to denigrate an area with a rich tradition of cultural diversity and many wonderful things to offer says a whole lot more about you than it does about us.

5. And repuke Pete Peterson is leading the Secretary of State race!

Got vote suppression? The good news is that Leland Yee's premature exit from the race helps Alex Padilla, who should get to November. And in this race, one would assume that either Yee or Perez would get over, and that the other one would endorse him/her.

edit: A huge potential downside is that the polls also show that Gov. Brown should get over 50% in June, and be re-elected. That would leave us with a November ballot with no President OR Governor at the top! That impacts not only these races, but Congressional ones like fundraising superstar Ro Khanna trying to poach veteran liberal Mike Honda's seat in CA17.

6. That just means we'll have to work that much harder

to ensure Democrats get out and vote on election day. CA-21 is turnable this year, even though she's a Blue Dog she's still better than the Teaklanner that's in there now. Unfortunately, and once again, in CA-22 the Democrats are running another sacrifice candidate who has not campaigned, has done no voter outreach whatsoever and hasn't raised a cent. Whoopie!

It's still pretty early for accurate polling as nobody really starts thinking about elections until after Labor Day.
