The seismic storm that unleashed more than 1,000 small earthquakes in San Bernardino and Riverside counties these last three weeks elicited what has become a typical reaction in quake country.
To some, the swarmageddon 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles brought fear that a bigger threat was coming. To others, as long as they didnt feel a shake, it was easy to just put it out of their minds.
California has small quakes all the time a magnitude 3 every other day, on average. But not all of them act the same, and some bring more danger than others.
As officials install more seismic sensors as part of the states early warning system, experts are getting an increasingly better look at Californias smaller earthquakes.

(149,523 posts)Of course, you want to be prepared. But simply worrying without preparation for the "big one" is foolish.
We can't control them--all we can do is get as ready as possible, and then put it away. No sense in spinning our wheels over the uncontrollable.

I live in tornado country. We have a weather radio and a basement. There have been major tornadoes around me over the years. Of course I would hate to lose everything to a tornado. But being prepared is all we can do.

(6,831 posts)The best you can do is follow the guidelines and have things anchored well, know where all the shut-off valves are located, keep the flashlight batteries up to date.
We used to joke that we didn't get out of bed for anything less than a 4-pointer.
