(51,511 posts)What you are doing is very transparent. You are posting in the California Group to get Sanders campaign announcements on the front page.

(36,988 posts)Santa Maria even though its in Santa Barbara county and its second largest city is rather conservative as compared to the city of Santa Barbara. A lot of military and sub contractors live there and work at the bases and surrounding support businesses. It has a large farming and migrant worker population, it grows strawberries and other crops year
I find it interesting the campaign chose it. There are I think 3 major high schools but that one is the largest for a population of 100,000. so the gym is not Texas size.
It is fairly close to San Luis Obispo which is not as large 45,000 but does have Cal Poly college and the town is very liberal. 30 min drive to Santa Maria. Santa Barbara is almost a one hour drive.
Thanks for the heads up.... I wonder what the turnout will be.

(3,919 posts)changed - many residents work and commute to santa barbara and goleta - housing is less expensive and shopping, too.
but, yes - military and subcontractors who are unable to find housing in limited lompoc and are flabbergasted by the cost of living in the santa ynez valley or santa barbara.
many of the old ranching and farming families still live there.
however, the most significant population which continues to increase are the farmworker families that have remained and are now generational.
perhaps campaign staff chose it to reach out to a marginalized working class community. also, alan hancock college is an integral component of the community economic base.
