Sheriff Joe’s world crumbles

Long time coming, but anyone with a brain and an appetite for local news knew it had to happen at some point.

Extensive article in Salon. Here's a taste:

PHOENIX–With fresh calls for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio to face a federal criminal trial, many are predicting the end of his controversial career. What few people realize outside metropolitan Phoenix is how much Arpaio’s world has already fallen apart around him.

One-by-one, Arpaio’s closest allies have been forced from power or severed support, leaving the combative 79-year-old sheriff seeking his sixth term increasingly isolated and vulnerable as emboldened foes sharpen their attacks.

The latest Arpaio political supporter to fall is former Maricopa County attorney Andrew Thomas, who was disbarred April 10 for engaging in unethical conduct to intimidate and smear his and Arpaio’s political adversaries.

A stinging 247-page opinion written by a three-member Arizona state Supreme Court disciplinary panel supporting the disbarment ruling also concluded there was “beyond reasonable doubt” that Thomas had violated federal civil rights laws.

While Thomas, a Republican, has not been criminally charged, the opinion made it crystal clear that his unethical and allegedly illegal conduct was the result of his “unholy collaboration” with Arpaio, also a Republican, to use their law enforcement powers to retaliate against critics.

Thomas and an assistant prosecutor, Lisa Aubuchon, were disbarred for violating perjury and intimidation laws when they filed criminal charges against Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Gary Donahoe and two county supervisors, Mary Rose Wilcox and Don Stapley.

This clown has always been more interested in publicity stunts and taking care of his cronies than running one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the nation, but the last couple of terms have really seen the corruption take root and blossom.

I only hope we have the choice of an actual professional to vote for next time around (if I still live in Maricopa County).

2. We have a good candidate to replace Arpaio: Paul Penzone

"I served as a Phoenix police officer for 21 years. I patrolled city streets, worked as an undercover detective to take down drug traffickers, and directed the Silent Witness program to solve high profile cases throughout the valley and capture dangerous fugitives. I know what it takes to fight crime, prevent crime, put criminals behind bars and keep our neighborhoods safe.

I’m running for Sheriff because I believe we deserve to feel safe in our neighborhoods and be proud of law enforcement officials. Join me to RETIRE Joe Arpaio and protect EVERY PERSON in Maricopa County. We can move in a new direction, but I need your help. Together, we can make Maricopa County the safest community in America."
-- Paul Penzone

3. That is good news. And it may be one of the reasons that the Obama campaign feels it has a chance to

Win in Arizona in November. Thanks to all of the good people of AZ who are working on the ground to change the atmosphere for the better.

4. While you might do a better job than Arpaio,

I doubt you will win. There is no evidence in your post that you hate brown people or that you are good on publicity or that you will not coddle convicts.

The pinheads in Arizona are not going to vote for you.

I sent a donation.

7. I was listening to one of the local Spanish stations in my car

yesterday and they were almost gleeful that the bastard is finally going down. If even half the stuff they were saying about him is true (and my guess is it's all true), he should spend the rest of his rotten life in a prison system he helped to design: tents in the desert and bologna sandwiches three times a day.

Spanish stations tend to lay all this stuff out, there's no corporate pussyfooting around the truth to avoid embarrassing the rich and powerful.

10. Worse than that. I had a few friends who were his 'guests'

20 years ago. The undergarments were dyed pink, they were housed in tents in the desert in 120 degree temps. Spoiled bologna sandwiches and rampant racism from the cops. The ones I knew were in there (mostly) for small bits of pot.

12. Where is his posse? You know the one who could not prove Obama was not born in Hawaii.

Is it true he has some 400 sexual backlog cases? Rotten to the core.
