4. Lessons From My Dad

My dad was an “accidental” lover of horticulture, having discovered his love of plants mid-life. He was a quiet, reserved man who loved to nurture. THAT part is a long story. But I so remember him explaining to me, when I was a little tiny girl, that something we know as “weeds” might be “cherished” on other parts of the globe…..that those small plants might produce crops that feed people, insects, our environmental systems. I would be right beside him, as we talked, hanging on his every word. And he would engage me, too, and explain - - always calling me Pup. Always telling me he loved me. Always reading books to me, and to my older brothers.

My quiet hero. He spent time in a greenhouse that was attached to our home, listening to jazz, smoking his cigarettes, sipping his martinis, and enjoying every single plant that he coaxed along. He loved working in soil. He loved itsy bitsy seedlings and taught me to handle them with tweezers!!! Tweezers! He was a Renaissance kinda guy. Ivy League. Bow tie. Liberal. Progressive. Dang. And small town WV, too. Sniff.

His daily work was retail, and he was a master at that, too. Customers loved him.

He adored and loved my Mom. She was priceless. She was a history teacher. Beloved. Their love was always evident, and important, and remains the foundation of my world, even though they are both gone, now.

I hit the lottery with my parents. I truly hit the lottery……..wow.

Back to weeds. I guess I am in them. Shoot.

Thanks for letting me remember.

5. You sound like a natural born storyteller, my dear WVGal1963...

This is a beautiful, heart-felt post. I could see what you were describing, so clearly.

Welcome to DU! I hope to see more writing from you.

15. Looks like a dandelion gone to seed - that then got wet.

So delicate and “fairy-like”!

Great shot! Thanks for posting it!

17. Polly beat me to it...

It reminds me of Shadow, too. That was my exact first reaction when I saw your photo, George.

Quite soft and lovely, with colors the same as Shadow’s fur.
