1. I had a TERRIBLE time trying to decide on my submission for this contest!

The Buckeye was a shot I got in the Butterfly Garden on a visit to Victoria, BC some years ago.

I'm holding one photo back in case we get to submit a second, but my #3 choice is one of my favorites from Bonaire

Life on the Marina Rocks

2. Thanks for submitting

I thought about starting another thread for also rans, those that almost made the cut. Then I decided that it might cause confusion if there were two photo posting threads.

3. Maybe - this great idea

could become reality after the contest is over. I also have a very hard time making a decision....

6. Good idea.

I think you're right, it might cause confusion. Better to wait until after the contest, IMHO.

27. Another idea

This contest has been running forever, certainly started LONG before I got here. But is it to see whose picture gets the most votes or is it to see some really wonderful images captured by members? I always feel bad about the entries that only get a very few votes. Photography is like all art, it's so subjective.

If I had my druthers, the contest with voting for the "best" would instead be a monthly Photo Expo, where member photographers are invited to post a favorite photo for everyone to see. No reason not to announce a theme for each month, or make it two photos if needed. Everyone's entry is equal, no judging. Otherwise basically the same.

I figured it might create more engagement in the group and I'm curious to see other images.

7. And I'm in!

I photographed these elephant seals up near Hearst Castle.

They are practice fighting, being juveniles and not yet old/mature enough to breed.

I just love mnhtnbb's butterfly!

African mammals and birds. Holding a beautiful bird in reserve.

12. Eeek!!!!

alfredo!

I caught one, once, when I was a teenager. In the house. Didn't want to smash it with a broom. Got a coffee can. Dropped over its head, slipped newspaper under it to turn it over then popped on the top.

Left it on the kitchen counter with a note for my parents (who were out at a friend's house). Went to bed. Woke up to my mom screaming.

That was fun.

Only later did I learn they could jump!

14. 🤣 Reminds me of an incident from my adolescent years.

Was coming home late and saw a rather LARGE bullfrog in the road so I stopped and caught him intending to have sautéed frog legs for breakfast. Put him in the glove box of Mom's car. Forgot all about him until next morning when I was awakened by loud screams and a commotion in the garage.

She opened the glove box and this frog launched past her and left a smear on the rear window.

No more car usage for a few weeks . . .

13. One that didn't make the cut from another rookery in Florida.

The contest is at 10 as I type and I'm impressed with the entries we have. Some talented people contributing!

The best part of the contest isn't the competition, it's seeing through other people's eyes and experiencing what they did.

BTW if you can find a rookery along the gulf coast it's a great place if you can get to eye level with the nestlings. Bring a ladder! Rookery season is roughly late Feb to May.

24. My favorite

Is near the back of the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine, FL. Happened by accident, they discovered a symbiotic relationship with the gators, who protect the nests from predators like raccoons, etc.

37. Good thing I checked!

My hungry caterpillar was on an hibiscus bloom on a potted tree on my patio. I looked it up. Turns out it's an American Dagger moth and those bristly hairs contain toxins. It will sting you and cause a burning, itching sensation on your skin which can turn into a rash.

Look it up before you pick it up!

Somehow I missed the memo, though I looked for it. I see some members have two photos, but we are up to 31 now so I assume only those few get to enter twice??? Where was the notice about entering a second photo?

It's common for the host to allow second entries as time runs out to fill the contest. It doesn't always happen but there is always an announcement.

Just from the the also ran you posted anything you entered would have been a great addition.

46. I would like to say...

I am glad I picked "Critters of the World" for a contest theme. All the entries are terrific. Congratulqtions to all!

I am sitting in my RV just a few feet from the Owens River in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. There is fishing and photography on the agenda this week. Hopefully I'll have some new critter and astro pics to add to my portfolio.
